There is something just so relaxing about a hike through nature. The fresh air and the sounds of the outdoors all around you is a feeling you can’t get anywhere else. Fortunately, there are many exceptional hiking trails to enjoy in the Hampton, Virginia, area!
Sandy Bottom Nature Park
Sandy Bottom Nature Park is an environmentally-friendly park preserve that focuses on education and nature. In the park, you will find beautiful hiking trails, an educational nature center, and ample room for your favorite recreation. You can fish, kayak, canoe, or swim at the park.
Keep an eye out, as the Sandy Bottom Nature Park is also a great place to view some of Virginia’s wildlife. Turtles, snakes, birds, and unique fish have all been spotted at the park. The Sandy Bottom Nature Park is also historically important to the area and visitors can learn more about the Powhatan Confederacy and European immigrants from the 1600s.
Noland Trail
The Noland Trail runs for approximately five miles, giving you ample room to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Each of the 14 bridges along the trail is numbered and offers its own unique sights. You will also find picnic tables, benches, and interesting monuments as you hike the trail. The large, shaded trees, make the Noland Trail a comfortable hike, even on a hot summer day. You can view turtles, birds, fish, and even sights of the Mariner’s Museum. The hiking trail runs along Lake Maury, adding to the relaxation of the area.
Grandview Nature Preserve
With over 475-acres of land, you can connect with nature without worrying about large crowds of people at the Grandview Nature Preserve. If you continue on the paved hiking trail for a quarter of a mile, the road branches off and will lead you to the beach. The refreshing cool waters of the Chesapeake Bay is the perfect end to a day spent hiking!
Many locals also come to the Grandview Nature Preserve for fishing but keep in mind, you’ll need a saltwater fishing license to fish here. You’ll also want to bring your camera to the nature preserve because it’s often populated with local birds and other water life.
Newport News Park
The Newport News Park is a great option for hikers, complete with ample outdoor area and beautiful sights. This park offers over 7,000-acres of land with the 2.6-mile-long White Oak Nature Trail, beginning at the Newport News Interpretive Center and then winding a loop throughout the park.
Many hikers plan to complete the trail because at the end you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the west end of the reservoir. Within the park, you can view marshes, wildlife, and reservoirs, and stop at the Interpretive Center for more information about the trails.
